iPhones are the New Recording Studios

On Wednesday, 18th January

You’d have thought releasing an album would be tricky enough, all the writing, performing, planning and recording, yet Alabama based rock band One Like Son wanted to challenge themselves this time around. They returned to the “studio” with a bizarre vision- to record a 10 song record using only an iphone. And exactly one year down the line, the intriguing project is done, dusted and ready for release.

Beginning on January 1, 2011 and having a fully mastered final product ready by December 31, 2011 has meant that the year long project has had plenty of time to get music and tech lovers talking.

The band’s decision to use only iPhone apps throughout the entire production was an ambitious one, yet by using software such as FourTrack, MultiTrack DAW, AmpKit, ThumbJam and GuitarJack the band were able to experiment as much as they liked.

The Gorillaz undertook a similar venture in 2011, when they recorded an album on an iPad as a sort of ‘tour’ diary, and The 88 recorded popular hit “Love is the Thing” using FourTrack. It can’t be the easiest way to record a record but we reckon the gimmick could catch on! Buying an iPhone has gotta be cheaper than hiring out a studio!
